Trauma, Grief, and Dissociation:
Identification of, and recovery from, traumatic experiences requires a treatment approach that is specifically tailored to trauma and its symptoms and causes. Trauma can range from child abuse and neglect through auto accidents and victims or witnesses of violent crimes, to war and terrorist trauma, such as 9/11. Traumatic responses can range from mild to severe and can include Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and/or Dissociation. The therapy approach Dr. Rutstein employs is based on nearly 20 years of experience treating trauma with many patients and incorporates, as needed, EMDR, hypnosis, and art/expressive therapy.
Grief is a process we will all go through at some point in our lives. The keyword here is "process". When six months after a major loss you still feel you are drowning in grief, when it affects your capacity to work or enjoy life, when you descend into a depression, when you have trouble just getting through the day, then the process of grieving has become stuck. Grief therapy addresses the deep pain and torment that afflict the individual and helps them move through the grief and into healing.
